Abby -
I saw you with the Bangles some time ago in Las Vegas at the House of Blues. I really enjoy your bass playing. It's always nice to see another MusicMan
player.
I've been playing bass for about 40 years (old, huh?). Up until a few years ago, I played an 80s StingRay exclusively. These days I play mostly a Carvin
all Koa four string and a Fender Precision Lyte. The Carvin is sweet with a great neck, and the Fender growls more with a faster neck. Of course neither one
weighs as much as the StingRay.
I also have a Carvin 5 string. I never really got into the five. As Carol Kaye says, the five can drive the band too hard. Ultimately its all a matter of
taste, isn't it?
Back in the mid 60s, before I really started playing bass, Fender came out with a 5 that was tuned E A D G C, I believe. My style alternates between melodic
and rhythmic and I go up the neck a lot. So, when I bought the 5 I was surprised that the fifth string was the low B, rather than the high C. I'm
debating either selling it or restringing it like a six, less the low B.
Since you are a four-stringer like me, I was interested in your opinion on how or even whether to retune the 5. I appreciate your consideration.
